Every year workplaces, schools, early learning services, community groups, reconciliation groups, and people right across the country host a whole range of activities and events during National Reconciliation Week (NRW).
Check out the events below and see how you can mark NRW at an event near you.
The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June.
Please note: the events posted below are not the responsibility of Reconciliation Australia. If you have any questions regarding an event, please contact the organisers.
Prof Andy Redfern, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, shares findings from a pilot study into biological and therapeutic reasons Aboriginal communities experience poorer cancer outcomes. Prof Redfern investigated breast, head and neck and lung cancer outcomes, and found that anticipated differences in remoteness and socioeconomic status for Aboriginal patients only explained a modest proportion of this difference. More aggressive cancer types, stronger anti-cancer drug side effects leading to less treatment and different immune responses to cancer all contributed to worse outcomes. Drawing on lessons learned from this early work, detailed studies of head and neck cancer and lung cancers have been conducted with common and unique features leading to poorer survival. Common and differing drivers of mortality across these cancers and the design of a new networked service to assist in treating Aboriginal people with cancer across Western Australia will also be discussed. Will also be streamed online https://uwa.zoom.us/j/81536572712?pwd=ZHo2U1VCY2lXT3E3U0pzb2RMTkJTUT09
